Teachers (Starting with Grade 2)

Letter P.A.L.S. (Personalized Adventure Letter Series) is a dynamic school-based National Reading Project focused on helping students strengthen their reading skills through weekly, engaging practice! The Program is FREE and can be used in your classroom during Block Reading/SSR Time, Before/After School, and/or at Home as a way to engage parents on behalf of reading (Title One).

Sign up anytime during October through April. The 2013-2014 program will run from October 16, 2013, to April 30, 2014, and will feature the Pet Shop Pen Pals - PETS WRITE, KIDS READ ...Helping All Achieve! The Pet Shop Pen Pals are a special group of pets who love to write letters to students and tell them all about their cool adventures so they can practice reading. Each Pet Shop Pen Pals month-long series will contain 4-5 letters.

The Pet Shop Pen Pals will provide a new online letter for your students to read every Monday when they login on the Letter P.A.L.S. website. Each Pet Shop Pen Pals letter is personalized with the student's name, is 3 pages in length, professionally written, beautifully illustrated, and reviewed by reading specialists for age appropriateness. There’s more!

To bring the most meaning to each letter, special features have been added to the letters. First, each letter includes a "Paws for Reading" page that follows the third page of the letter and includes specific questions and answers for each letter. Once he/she reads and answers the questions, the student clicks on the Readers Are Winners button, which will place an electronic red paw print on the classroom chart signaling that he/she read that letter.

Next, as a means to promote vocabulary and spelling, 8 key words have been highlighted in red within each letter. Students are instructed to complete the crossword puzzle and word search sheet containing the 8 key words for each letter. Students can earn an additional 8 points for completing each crossword puzzle, and 8 additional points for completing the word search. Students can earn a total of 24 points for each letter completed.

What are these points for?

  • As an additional means to motivate the students to read the letters and complete the crossword puzzles and word searches, we have created fun, simple "Classroom Reward Passes" for the teachers to print and place in a box for the students to pick a pass if they earn enough points during the month.

  • Students can earn between 96 and 120 points per month, depending if there are 4 or 5 letters for that given month. When a student reaches 96 points for a given month, a yellow star will light up on the Teacher's Classroom Chart and qualifies them for a Classroom Reward Pass.

Your part is easy!

Enroll each of your students by entering his/her name in the Student Enrollment tabbed section, located within your Personal Teacher Administrative Area. A Username and Password will be generated for each student. Once complete, print off a master list of your students’ Usernames and Passwords. Inform your students of their Usernames and Passwords.

*Letter P.A.L.S. can also be used in the home. To assist you, we have drafted an official Parent Notification Letter to notify them of the program. This letter can be found by logging in and clicking on the tabbed PARENT NOTIFICATION LETTER section, located within your Personal Teacher Administration Area. Click the Print button and a letter for each enrolled student will be printed out with his/her name on it along with the student’s Username and Password. Sign and send them home with your students.

To check on your students’ progress, simply login and view your monthly classroom chart. Every time one of your students reads a letter and clicks on the Readers Are Winners button, a red paw print will be placed by his/her name on the classroom chart. Each letter is assigned a number and will light up accordingly. It's that easy!
